Movies I Cannot Live Without (in alphabetical order by title):
1) Clue – 1985 – dir. Jonathan Lynn – starring Tim Curry, Eileen Brennan, Madeline Kahn, Lesley Ann Warren, Christopher Lloyd, Martin Mull, and Michael McKean. – Yes, it was made after the board game. Tim Curry leads the cast as they deliver witty jabs at break-neck speed. Simply ridiculous.
2) The Departed – 2006 – dir. Martin Scorsese – starring Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin – A gripping plot, fantastic casting, incredible acting, Boston accents- what more do you want?
3) The Godfather – 1972 – dir. Francis Ford Coppola – starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton – What is there to say? This is *the* movie any film enthusiast cannot live without.
4) The Godfather Part II – 1974 – dir. Francis Ford Coppola – starring Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton – The only sequel to ever win the “Best Picture” Oscar. Some would argue this film is better than the film it succeeds. While I cannot honestly decide which film I prefer, I can say that I find both films superb
5) Hang ‘Em High – 1968 – dir. Ted Post – Starring Clint Eastwood – If you’re going to kill Clint Eastwood, you better make sure he’s dead.
6) La Vie En Rose – 2007 – dir. Oliver Dahan – starring Marion Cotillard – This film reveals the rather tragic life of French singer Edith Piaf, beloved by the Parisian working class. Marion Cotillard deserves a boatload of Oscars for her performance in this movie.
7) Little Miss Sunshine – 2006 – dir. – Starring Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Abigail Breslin, Paul Dano, Alan Arkin, and Steve Carell – A touching yet hilarious tale of an odd family and their rather unique little girl. I am Olive Hoover.
8) Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels – 1999 – dir. Guy Ritchie – starring Jason Flemyng, Nick Moran, Dexter Fletcher, Jason Statham – *The* heist film…that is also hilarious and quotable.
9) Mallrats – 1995 – dir. Kevin Smith – starring Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Shannon Doherty, Claire Forlani, Ben Affleck, Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith – The quintessential Kevin Smith film – a hilarious, yet oddly true to life dark comedy with a rapid fire witty script.
10) Pan’s Labyrinth – 2006 – dir. Guillermo del Toro – starring Ivana Baquero, Sergi Lopez, Maribel Verdu – The unique story of a young girl and her bittersweet fantasy.
11) Pulp Fiction – 1994 – dir. Quentin Tarrantino – starring John Travolta, Samuel L Jackson, Bruce Willis, Harvey Keitel – No comment could summarize the majesty of this film.
12) Singin’ In The Rain – 1952 – dir. Stanley Donen – starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor – Donald O’Connor is hilarious, Debbie Reynolds is cute, and Gene Kelly is just dreamy.
13) There Will Be Blood – 2007 – dir. Paul Thomas Anderson – starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano – This film unfolds beautifully with graceful precision. I would argue that the final scene is one of the greatest scenes in all of cinema.
